The cheque has cleared

French fishermen on Thursday lifted their blockade of Channel ports, providing relief to thousands of British motorists, but vowed to resort to other forms of action in pursuit of higher fishing quotas.

The fishermen allowed ferry traffic to resume in and out of Calais, Dunkirk and Boulogne after late-night talks on Wednesday with the French government, which ended with the promise of €4bn ($5.3bn, £3.5bn) in compensation.
